Tucked away in the heart of Northampton, our Community Allotment is a welcoming outdoor space where our clients can connect with nature and develop new skills, supporting both their physical and emotional wellbeing.
We run weekly visits to the plot, giving our clients the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities including sowing seeds, planting crops, watering, weeding, composting and harvesting the produce they’ve grown. As our crops flourish throughout the seasons, our clients develop new practical skills, grow their confidence, and experience the satisfaction of nurturing something all the way from seed to harvest.
Our weekly visits provide gentle physical activity, in a calm and welcoming environment, allowing those we support to make the most of nature and enjoy the many benefits of spending time outdoors. These sessions also encourage friendship, teamwork and social connection – helping to reduce isolation by providing a peaceful space to relax and unwind with others. This is especially valuable for many of our clients who live in highly developed urban areas, who may otherwise have very limited access to safe, comfortable outdoor spaces.
The fruit, vegetables and herbs grown on our allotment also help support many of our charity’s wider services. From preparing homemade meals for our Social Clubs and Cookery Classes, to supplying fresh produce for our Mobile Community Shop, the harvests from our allotment help to spread its’ benefits even further to communities across Northamptonshire.
Our Community Allotment is dedicated to the memory of our much-loved Social Club member, John Macken. John was a passionate gardener who found great joy in spending time on his allotment. Following his passing in 2023, John’s family felt it would be a fitting tribute for the plot to be passed on to TMDF, allowing it to continue bringing joy and purpose to the members of our local community for many years to come.
Our allotment certainly wouldn’t be what it is today without the incredible generosity and efforts of the many local businesses and groups who helped bring this project to life.
A fantastic team from Morgan Sindall Infrastructure dedicated two weeks to transforming our Community Allotment during summer 2026. They installed new perimeter fencing, built our polytunnel, fruit cage, raised beds and flower beds, and even rotovated our growing areas ready for more planting. Their incredible work has created an accessible, productive and welcoming space that our clients will benefit from for many years to come.
Hawk Drainage & Groundworks generously laid the pathways throughout our allotment, creating safe and accessible routes all around the site. Their support has made our plot far more accessible for all our clients, especially those who use wheelchairs and other mobility aids.
Crest Scaffolding have continually offered their support to our allotment, generously donating a large supply of scaffold boards which our team have used to construct a wide range of essential fixtures throughout the plot. From raised beds to fruit cages, their ongoing generosity has been instrumental in helping us continue to develop and improve our allotment space.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to the many community groups and volunteers who have generously donated their time, skills and enthusiasm to help develop and maintain our Community Allotment. From clearing excess vegetation and overgrowth, to putting in new plants and helping us to maintain the plot, their support has been invaluable:
We are also incredibly fortunate to have the continued support of our wonderful volunteer gardener, Patrick Peter. His passion and dedication are at the heart of our allotment’s continued success, and he has played an invaluable role in helping the plot to truly flourish.
Patrick first came to TMDF as a client, joining our weekly men’s club. Since then, he has become a much-loved member of our charity’s team, regularly volunteering at our social clubs and always lending a helping hand wherever it’s needed.
When we opened our Community Allotment, Patrick was one of the first to get involved. Today, he plays a vital role in maintaining the site throughout the year, planting and caring for crops, tending to the gardens, sharing his knowledge with other clients, and helping ensure the plot remains a welcoming, productive space for everyone to enjoy.
