Last night, Thursday 22nd January 2026, TMDF’s inspirational Intergenerational Stories Exhibition lit up Northampton International Academy with personal histories, photographs, and a vibrant sense of connection. The event marked the culmination of months of collaboration between older clients and students from Northampton International Academy, part of East Midlands Academy Trust, and Northampton School for Boys who worked together to document and celebrate life stories from the community.
The project was made possible by a generous grant from Northamptonshire Community Foundation, which funded the programme from start to finish.
Students from TMDF’s Official Partner Schools were paired with older adults supported by our services. Students interviewed participants about everything from their childhoods and first jobs to cherished travels and life lessons, before transforming these conversations into written biographies. Each story was reviewed and approved by its subject, ensuring a respectful and accurate representation. The exhibition featured these biographies on individual storyboards, complete with photographs and images representing key moments from each life.
“Working side by side, younger and older generations contributed their unique skills and viewpoints, enriching the experience for all involved. These shared moments not only supported personal development and confidence but also led to the formation of genuine and lasting friendships, strengthening community bonds and demonstrating the powerful impact of intergenerational learning.” Martin Serrão, Executive Headteacher, Northampton International Academy.
Families, friends, trustees and supporters of TMDF including Deputy Mayor Mike Hallam joined the students and participants to celebrate the results of this unique collaboration. Guests also enjoyed tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes while exploring the exhibition and chatting with the participants.
Teresa McCarthy-Dixon, our founder, commented: “For everyone involved, this experience has been a brilliant reminder that we always have more in common than we realise. Many older people overcame enormous difficulties throughout their lives, and although things may be very different now, the younger generations equally have a lot of challenges to face today. It was phenomenal to see them come together and connect over this.”
The stories will also form part of an online archive, creating a lasting digital legacy for all involved. The project reflects our commitment to fostering meaningful connections, encouraging empathy, and giving older adults a platform to share their voices.
From first interview to final storyboard, our Intergenerational Stories Programme has shown how the simple act of listening can create lasting bonds across generations.
