John Healy was born in 1944 in County Clare, Ireland where he spent his childhood in Carrigaholt, a small rural village on a dairy farm surrounded by horses and cows. Life in the countryside was modest but full of character, shaped by a strong sense of community and self-reliance. From an early age, John would often help neighbours by working on local farms, learning the value of hard work and service to his local community.
His journey to education began each morning with a two-mile walk to school. He started school at the age of six he loved every moment of it. He was an enthusiastic pupil, with a particular passion for sports. A proud memory from those early years was winning the School Football and Athletics County Final. Gaelic football was another of his passions, and he played it regularly during his youth with Shannon Rangers as they were known as then. John also loved cycling. John left school at fourteen, as was common at the time, but his thirst for knowledge didn’t end there. At sixteen, he moved to England, settling in Northampton, where he later enrolled in higher education at Northampton College of Technology on St. Georges Avenue where he studied engineering.
Though he once dreamed of becoming a pilot, he eventually chose a more grounded path working in construction all his life. He had a solid and rewarding career in the construction industry, where he applied both his practical upbringing and his technical training. He had his own company in the 1970s working all over the country, he also worked as a subcontractor for many years.
John has been involved with the Sons of Eireann GAA football team for over sixty years, he was the team’s captain for a time, and he remembers fondly a few tours done of Ireland in 1973, 1978 and 1998 where they played against a few local clubs in counties Clare and Mayo.
John has also encountered several well-known personalities through his love of sport through the years, including Jimmy Barry Murphy and most of the GAA presidents!
Music also became an important backdrop to John’s life, with The Rolling Stones being a particular favourite. Their songs, full of energy and rebellion, accompanied him through many of life’s chapters. John used to drive a minibus ferrying people to the dance halls of Coventry, Birmingham, and London back in the day. He would stop at Watford Gap Services on these trips where he met celebrities like Lulu and Jimmy Hendrix!
John got married to Noreen Durkin, a Northampton girl with Irish parents from counties Armagh and Sligo, in 1973 at St Aidan’s Church in Kingsthorpe. Noreen’s cousin, Fr Sean married them. John was married for 43 years until his wife sadly passed away from cancer in 2016.
Together, they built a life full of love and purpose. They raised six children, all of whom have gone on to build successful lives of their own: two are in America, one in Ireland, one in London, and the remaining two are here in Northampton. John has sixteen grandchildren who keep him very busy!
Now 81 years old, John is a reflective man, known for his insightful remarks and grounded perspective. He is incredibly proud of his children and what they have achieved in both their professional and personal lives.
John’s advice to the youth of today would be to remember that the most important thing in life is your family and close friends. He says to drink in moderation, keep away from drugs, and above all stay positive!
