A Fresh Coat of Hope: Repainting Sylvia’s Home

For Sylvia (whose name has been changed for privacy), living with epilepsy means navigating unpredictable seizures, often up to ten a month, and the long recovery days that follow. Unable to work and living on a small, fixed income, she spends much of her time at home.  However, her flat, with dark blue walls, exposed plaster, holes, and long-neglected paintwork, had become a daily reminder of struggle rather than a place of comfort.

That changed recently when TMDF arranged for volunteer painter, Herbie, to repaint her flat.  She still feels emotional about the difference it’s made.

“All of it made me feel worse. When you’re unwell and you don’t have the money to fix things, your home can make you more depressed. I was so happy and grateful when I heard TMDF could help, honestly, I was really touched because I’ve never experienced anything like that in my life. It was such a surprise”

Herbie worked with care and consistency, something she noticed immediately. The fresh paint, an elegant light grey with just a hint of lavender, has changed how she feels in her home.

“He was very friendly and polite, always on time, and he kept his word. That reliability really matters. I’d recommend him to anyone. It’s a beautiful, peaceful colour, now my flat feels like my home. It makes a huge difference to wake up and feel peaceful and happy.”

The effect of the transformation has reached her on a deeper level. When asked what she’d say to someone thinking about reaching out to TMDF, she didn’t hesitate:

“Everything that was done for me has lifted me spiritually and mentally. I spend a lot of time at home, and when your home looks nice, especially the walls and floors, it really changes how you feel. I’d definitely tell them to reach out if they truly need it.  TMDF is a great, very generous foundation.  As we move closer to 2026, when I reflect on all the things I’m grateful for in 2025, TMDF is definitely one of them.”

Today, Sylvia’s home is no longer overshadowed by hardship, but instead filled with warmth and hope.
