Bailey‘s Story

Cheers for Tuesdays

When Bailey first saw a flier in his doctor’s surgery about The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation’s Cheers for Tuesdays, our weekly men’s club, the idea of going into a room full of people felt overwhelming.

“I was anxious, withdrawn and convinced no one would want to talk to me.”

But one Tuesday afternoon, Bailey took a deep breath and walked into The Swan & Helmet just as the Cheers for Tuesdays session, packed with free hot drinks, games like darts, dominoes and pool, and plenty of friendly chat, was getting underway.

From the outset, the atmosphere was easy-going and supportive. A game of pool, a shared laugh, and a hot cup in hand soon made things feel far more comfortable than Bailey expected.

“I thought everyone would already know each other. But from the first moment, people came over, introduced themselves and made space for me. It felt like joining friends, not strangers.”

For Bailey, Cheers for Tuesdays has become a place where confidence has grown, friendships have formed, and a genuine sense of belonging has followed, thanks to the support of TMDF and its wonderful staff and volunteers.
