When Jean Harrington first approached TMDF, she was feeling anxious and out of her depth. A disagreement with a UK-based home improvement company over bathroom works in her home had gradually escalated, without her fully realising, into a court judgment and the very real prospect of enforcement action.
An older resident and regular attendee of TMDF social clubs, Jean, who had started to show the early signs of dementia, had not been opening her post for some time and had unknowingly missed key court correspondence. By the time she understood the seriousness of the situation, Court Enforcement Services were preparing next steps.
TMDF intervened quickly, contacting Court Enforcement Services to secure vital breathing space while also opening lines of communication with the company involved. Our team worked closely with Jean to understand her concerns, which centred on a bathroom she felt was unfinished and not fit for purpose.
Jean was clear about her position, she explained:
A joint visit was arranged by TMDF to Jean’s home, bringing together all parties alongside an independent, third-party plumbing firm local to Northampton. TMDF played a central role throughout, facilitating discussions, keeping conversations constructive and focused, and ensuring Jean felt supported and heard.
Following inspection and discussion, all parties agreed that a compromise was the best way forward. As part of the final agreement, the home improvement company accepted a reduced payment for the original works and supplied new sanitary units, while remedial works were completed by the local independent plumbing company. This resolved the outstanding issues and avoided the need for enforcement action.
The result was exactly what TMDF strives for: a practical solution that protected Jean from further distress and brought the matter to a close.
Today, Jean is relieved and delighted with the outcome.
This case demonstrates how TMDF, by offering practical support and calm facilitation, can help clients move through challenging situations towards a positive resolution.
