Maggie’s Story

Minibus Transport Service

Maggie, who lives in a small village about seven miles from Northampton town centre, had been struggling with severe social isolation. Living alone since her husband passed away, and with most of her family far away, trips beyond her village were rare and challenging. Maggie has several health conditions, including arthritis and a heart condition, and her visual impairment means she can no longer drive.

Referred by her community care nurse, Maggie started attending The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation’s (TMDF’s) Monday Club, which was a wonderful way for Maggie to get involved in the community once again.

However, getting to and from Northampton was a real ordeal. The only bus stop in her village is a ten-minute walk from her home, a painful journey during colder months. Even when she reached the stop, bus times were unreliable. Sometimes she would arrive early, only to wait in the cold if the bus was late, which took a serious toll on her circulation and joints. Maggie would also have to leave Monday Club early to make her bus home again. The full trip, with a transfer in town, could take over an hour each way, leaving Maggie exhausted and often forced to leave club sessions early.

When TMDF introduced its Minibus Service, Maggie was among the first to try it. Now she is picked up directly from her doorstep each Monday, enjoying the warmth, comfort, and company during the journey. The new service has transformed her experience: no more cold waits at the bus stop, and she can stay for the full duration of the club.

“I used to dread the journey here, it was cold, long, and exhausting. The minibus makes it so much easier, and everyone on it is so friendly. There’s always laughter and chatter on board, and it’s made such a difference!”

Thanks to the minibus, Maggie can now fully enjoy the Monday Club’s activities, meals, music and company, connecting with others without worrying about the journey home again. The service has turned what was once a stressful ordeal into one of the highlights of her week.
